Database of objects from the collection of František Řehoř – folk woodcarving

The collection of František Řehoř (1857–1899) at the current stage of research contains more than 2500 items related to the magic of Ukraine. According to the proposed classification, wooden products are represented in almost all its functional groups, which are divided into twenty-three subgroups, for example, clothing accessories, everyday items, household tools, ceremonial and customary items, liturgical items, items associated with spending free time and with representation. F. Řehoř collected most of the artifacts from the ethnographic region of Galician Hutsul.

The presented catalog includes mainly two types of objects, the first of which can be classified as household items. Despite their archaic morphology and purely practical character, these objects present an aesthetic feeling and artistic taste as well as skills of a wide range of people, but we also find here representatives of household equipment decorated by professional woodcarvers. The catalogue also focuses on making less well-known folk and ceremonial artefacts accessible, which need to be presented in the context of their use. The collection is supplemented with objects that serve as part of church inventories, especially several very interesting and visually impressive candlesticks. The catalogue thus makes accessible folk woodcarving objects that are unique not only in their origin, the way they are collected, but often also in their execution. The most detailed passportization aims to present not only richly decorated, but also laconic folk carving objects in the multi-layered reality of their everyday use by the inhabitants of Galicia in the second half of the 19th century.
