Database of items from the František Řehoř Collection – folk woodcarvings

In the current state of research, the František Řehoř (1857–1899) Collection contains over 2,500 items relating to the territory of Ukraine. Based on their suggested classification, wooden products are represented in almost all of its functional groups, which are further divided into 23 subgroups, such as clothing, everyday items, housewares, items related to folk customs, ceremonial items, religious items, items associated with leisure time and representative items. Řehoř collected most of these artifacts from the ethnographic region of Galician Hutsulshchyna.

The presented catalogue mainly includes two types of items: the first can be classified as housewares, which, despite their archaic forms and purely practical nature, demonstrate a sense of the aesthetic, artistic tastes and skills of general population. However, we can also find examples of housewares and furnishings crafted by professional woodcarvers. The second category included in the catalogue focuses on lesser-known ceremonial and religious items, which must be seen within the context of their use.

The collection also includes items that served as parts of church fixtures, particularly some very interesting and visually impressive candleholders. This catalogue popularizes folk woodcarvings that are unique not only in terms of their origin and how they were collected, but often also in terms of their design. The aim of this comprehensive cataloguing is to present not only lavishly decorated items, but also plain folk woodcarvings in the multi-faceted reality of their everyday use by the inhabitants of Galicia in the 2nd half of the 19th century.
